Where are you based?
In beautiful Brentford (Near Kew) a 25min oyster ride (Zone 3) from waterloo. I shoot a mixture of natural light and flash photography and have favourite spots around London, Brentford offers an eclectic mix of urban decay, canal-side backdrops and the beautiful Syon House and Gardens Royal Park.
What is your background?
I trained as a theatre lighting designer at The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, I went on to work with directors in the UK and abroad to illuminate actors and help them tell stories. Simultaneously I was photographing for the band 'Vintage Trouble' and theatre productions at The Royal Opera House, The Oslo Opera House, in the West End and on the Fringe. My love for photography led to commissions in TV and Film working as a unit stills publicity photographer. Throughout the numerous iterations of my career I have been tasked with making actors look their best, I bring this experience to my headshot photography.
When do you shoot?
I shoot on weekdays and some Saturdays. If i'm going to be on a film shoot I tend to know a while in advance so I can be very flexible, get in touch and we can book something in.
How many background/costume changes can I have in a shoot?
I don’t have a set number, each shoot varies because each actor's needs vary, I prefer to aim for a range in expressions than shoot a vast selection of outfits and backgrounds. If you bring a good selection of tops (plain and without stripes/logos or patterns) we can make choices on the day, V-necks often work well and shirts can be good, just make sure the collar is ironed.
What happens if it rains?
It's up to you. If you need your shots urgently I'll happily shoot in the rain and we will make the most of architectural cover at the location (I ensure all the locations I use have some cover). If you would like to reschedule, that isn't a problem, just drop me an email or give me a call and we can talk through options.
Do you provide a make-up artist?
I always aim to portray you in an honest way that represents the actual person who will walk in to the audition room. The best make up you can bring is the confidence to wear as little as possible, a good nights sleep the day before (a hangover will show on camera!) and to drink plenty of water and moisturise in the week leading up to our session.
Spots or minor skin blemishes can be removed digitally.
What should I bring with me?
A selection of tops.
Any make-up you wear day to day.
Music can help the shoot feel relaxed and so bring an iPod/phone if you would like.
What do you charge?
Check out my highly competitive pricing and what's included here.
How do I pay?
Cash on the day of the shoot.
You will receive a letter-headed receipt.
How will I receive the images?
The images will all be uploaded to a private internet link that will be emailed to you. There will be three folders, Colour, B&W and Contact Sheet.
I will then send you a link to the retouched images in their full resolution in .jpeg format.
How should I credit photos on spotlight etc.?
All images should be credited ©Rob Youngson.
Some shots on your site are in landscape format, why is this?
The Hollywood style head-shot in landscape format is favoured by many in TV/Film. However, some industries such as Theatre often prefer portrait shots, I shoot both. This is a stylistic choice we can discuss at our pre-shoot consultation.
Do you shoot in black and white?
I always shoot in colour, I will provide both colour and black and white shots for you to choose from.
I convert images to black and white in post-processing.
What kind of retouching services do you offer?
I like to be as subtle as possible, I work hard to get the shots as beautifully lit as possible during the shoot itself. However I will sharpen and brighten eyes and remove any spots or skin blemishes as needed. I will also subtly adjust colour to make the image sing.
How long do I have to choose the photos I want?
As long as you like.
Do you only shoot actors?
Absolutely not! I'll shoot anyone who needs a headshot, be it for LinkedIn, a business venture or any other purpose. Just get in touch and we can discuss your needs.
